A suspension clunk at low speed is one of those noises that can be hard to pin down from the driver's seat. You hear it pulling into a driveway, crossing a rough parking lot, or rolling over broken pavement, but the car might still feel normal on the highway.


That kind of noise usually means something in the suspension is moving farther than it should. The sound can come from a worn joint, loose mount, damaged bushing, or even hardware that only shifts when one wheel moves up or down. Sway Bar Links Are a Common Source of Low-Speed Clunks


Sway bar links connect the sway bar to the suspension and help control body roll. They move constantly as each wheel goes over bumps, and the small joints or bushings inside them wear over time.


When they get loose, the noise is often most noticeable on uneven roads where one wheel moves differently from the other. You might hear a light clunk or knocking sound over small bumps, especially at lower speeds.

A worn bushing can make one solid clunk when the vehicle rolls over a bump, brakes, or changes direction. Sometimes the noise shows up more clearly when entering a driveway because the suspension twists at an angle.


During an inspection, we apply load to the suspension and watch how far the control arm moves. A bushing can look worn without being loose enough to cause trouble, while another can look decent until force is applied and the arm shifts too much.


Ball Joints and Tie Rods Can Create a Heavier Knock


Ball joints and tie rods are important because they help locate and steer the wheel. When they develop play, the noise is usually deeper than a small sway bar rattle.


You might hear a clunk while turning slowly, braking, or driving over a pothole. The steering can also start feeling less precise if the looseness becomes severe.


We take play in these parts seriously because the issue is not only noise. Excessive movement can affect alignment, tire wear, and steering control. If a ball joint or tie rod is loose beyond specification, don't put off replacing it just because the vehicle still drives.


Strut Mounts Can Clunk Even When the Strut Is Not Leaking

Sometimes the source is not the suspension at all. Loose exhaust hardware, a spare tire, jack, or cargo item can make a convincing rear clunk. We rule those out before replacing suspension parts.


Broken Springs and Damaged Spring Seats Can Also Clunk


Coil springs can crack near the top or bottom where the final coil sits in the spring seat. That break is not always easy to see without lifting the vehicle and looking closely.


A broken spring can shift slightly as the suspension moves and create a clunk or metallic knock. Rusted or damaged spring seats can do the same thing.


We also look for changes in ride height. If one corner sits lower than the others or the vehicle bottoms out more easily, the spring deserves closer attention. Regular maintenance gives us a chance to spot cracks, corrosion, and damaged seats before the noise gets worse.


The Repair Starts With Reproducing the Noise


Suspension noises are easier to fix when we can make them happen on command. We road-test the vehicle on the kind of surface that produces the complaint, then inspect the corner that matches the sound.


From there, we check joints, bushings, mounts, springs, and hardware for actual movement. The goal is to see or feel the looseness before recommending parts. A suspension component should not be replaced just because it is common for that model to fail.


If the clunk gets louder, the steering starts feeling loose, or the vehicle begins pulling or wearing tires unevenly, the problem deserves attention sooner.
